About

My name is Aurelian Dumitru and I welcome everyone to call me AD.

This is my personal blog. I was born in Romania and I live in Austin, Texas, USA.

First, the disclaimer:

  • The opinions presented on this site are my own and don’t necessarily reflect the viewpoints of current or former employers.

I’ve been in the industry for more than 20 years, though I started with electronics much earlier, at the age of 10.

As you can see, the passion is still there! It is that passion that helped me pursue a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, with specialization in Radio Communications and High-speed Data Communications. Over the years I was fortunate enough to work on a variety of projects and technologies. I’ve started back in the ’80s with embedded programming when processors like 8080 and Z80 were all the rage. I’ve done almost everything that a techie can only dream about: analog and digital design (even schematic- and board-level), programming in a variety of languages (Assembly, Fortran, Pascal, C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, C#, PHP, etc.), system-level design and integration, communication interfaces and protocols, industry standards involvement (RFID, USB, IPMI, DMTF, Cloud Management, etc.), custom software, and many other cool technologies.

Somehow I always find myself on the bleeding edge of new opportunities. Maybe it is my entrepreneurial spirit or just the insanely rewarding satisfaction in solving extremely challenging problems.

I started my own engineering services business couple years after the Romanian Revolution at a time when the whole Romanian economy was very unstable, however there was real need for technology. Very early on I learned that the extremely demanding job of running a business cannot be done without total dedication to your Customer and your Employees. The business was always profitable. I sold the business three years later when I moved to US.

I came to Dell in 2000 when the Enterprise Software team was just starting. Being part of the team that delivered version 1.0 of Dell OpenManage (I still have the t-shirt to prove it!) was something that I could only dream about. We were a team with a lot of passion for technology breaking new grounds.

In late 2006 I was one of the first ten members of the Data Center Solutions (DCS) team. Our mandate was to design custom hardware for world’s largest data center customers. Market facts show that the endeavor was extremely successful.

Three years later, in 2009, I was one of the two individuals who started the Cloud Solutions team at Dell. I was very proud to be part of the team, working with customers, addressing real customer needs and driving strategies and architectures for years to come.

I’d like to use this blog to share opinions, connect with like-minded people, and try to help those in similar situations.

This site is dedicated to the convergence of technology, communications and sociocultural impact. I hope that together we can influence the way the technology impacts our daily lives.

Hyperscale computing fascinated me for years. Designing, building, and tuning hyperscale systems are only few of the topics that I’d like to discuss here.

The social impact that these technologies have on our daily lives cannot be minimized or discounted. Machine learning, artificial intelligence, and mobile computing are finally coming out of the lab and giving way to a new breed of communication models that blend technology, science and human ingenuity.

The rise and proliferation of hyperscale technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cloud, and so on strive to tune the inner dynamics of the environment to our incredibly amazing need to communicate, collaborate and innovate. Isn’t that the very essence of simply being human?

By the way, I haven’t answered the question that had me start this blog: RATIONALITY or INTELLIGENCE?
